What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help people process distressing experiences, trauma and memories that may continue to affect how they feel, think and respond in the present.
Sometimes difficult or overwhelming experiences can remain stored in ways that leave the nervous system reacting as though the experience is still happening. This may contribute to anxiety, emotional overwhelm, intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened reactions, negative beliefs about oneself, or feeling "stuck" in familiar patterns.

EMDR uses a structured therapeutic process that includes bilateral stimulation, commonly through guided eye movements or other alternating sensory input. This supports the brain's natural information-processing system, allowing distressing memories and associated thoughts, emotions and body sensations to be processed and integrated more adaptively. |
How can EMDR help?EMDR may be helpful for people experiencing:
safety, preparation, emotional regulation and each person's individual readiness.
The aim is not to erase the past, but to reduce the emotional intensity attached to difficult memories so they can become part of your history without continuing to have the same power over your present.
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
- Distressing or intrusive memories
- Anxiety, fears and phobias
- Grief and loss
- Experiences of abuse, neglect or difficult relationships
- Negative beliefs about self
- Emotional triggers and heightened nervous-system responses
- Difficult experiences that continue to influence present-day wellbeing
safety, preparation, emotional regulation and each person's individual readiness.

Why work with Me for EMDR?
I am a PACFA Clinical Registered Psychotherapist, Creative Arts Therapist, EMDR Practitioner, Relationship Counsellor and DBT Practitioner, with extensive experience working across private practice, mental health, wellbeing and community settings. Through my private practice, InformEmotion, I work with adults and adolescents experiencing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, emotional dysregulation and significant life transitions. |
My experience allows me to offer EMDR within a broader psychotherapeutic framework rather than as a stand-alone technique. I draw upon more than 25 years of therapeutic and community-based experience, alongside evidence-based approaches including
EMDR, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, relationship therapy and creative arts therapy.
An important part of my approach is understanding the individual before beginning trauma-processing work. EMDR is not necessarily something we begin in the first session. We initially explore what has brought you to therapy, your history, current circumstances, strengths, supports and the ways you currently manage difficult emotions or experiences.

Together, we can determine
whether EMDR is appropriate for you and when you are ready to begin. Preparation may include developing grounding, emotional-regulation and nervous-system support strategies so that the EMDR process can be undertaken at a pace that feels manageable. I offer a compassionate, client-centred approach that recognises that trauma can be experienced emotionally, cognitively and physically. My aim is to provide a therapeutic relationship in which you feel supported to understand your responses, build resources and safely approach experiences that may previously have felt difficult to process. |
